Ludmila Ultiskaya comes from Russia to talk about her extraordinary novel — Daniel Stein, Interpreter. Based on the real life story of Oswald Rufeisen who miraculously survived the Holocaust by working in the Gestapo as an interpreter and went on to become a Carmelite monk in Israel trying to bring Christianity back to its Jewish roots. She will discuss with philosopher Brian Klug the character of Daniel as symbol of love, humanity and tolerance.

Ludmila Ulitskaya was born in the Urals. Having worked in genetics and biochemistry, shortly before perestroika, she became Repertory Director of the Hebrew Theatre of Moscow. She is the author of fourteen works of fiction, three children?s books and six plays. She is Russia?s bestselling novelist.

Brian Klug is Senior Research Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at St Benet's Hall, Oxford University as well as being Associate Editor of Patterns of Prejudice. His latest book is Being Jewish and Doing Justice: Bringing Argument to Life.
